An Old Burden Finally Gone by swandog An Old Burden Finally Gone by swandog
I don't normally share really personal stuff here, but I wanted to share this. Some of you (my close friends) know that I was shot in the chest by accident when was nine, but most of you don't. Now, as of the first week of March, it has finally been removed (thanks to Norway's free healthcare system, as I could never have afforded this back when I lived in the US). I carried it (both pieces, since it broke in half, as you can see) deep within my upper right lung for 33 years, and it caused me a lifetime of problems, from chronic coughing up blood to chest pains, any time I tried to exercise, laugh out loud, yell, or bounce up and down...basically, anything that moved my lung around. I also gained a lot of weight during 3 pregnancies, and could never work it off afterwards because of the bullet, so I'm still struggling to lose it (having hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia doesn't help much with that either). The upper lung was also bound to the chest wall by scar tissue (to where the entry wound was, which you can see the scar of in the image), and that had to be cut away too, and they had to open up my ribcage to get to it all. Now I have a 7 inch scar wrapping around my side, and still am in some pain from that, as well as from the lung and sternum, where they were both cut, but it's slowly passing. As least the bullet is out now, and I can hope to get some semblance of my life back again. I would love nothing more than to actually be able to jog, since, before I was shot, I was the fastest sprinter in my elementary school, and afterwards, could never run again. So who knows what my life might have been, had it not been for the bullet...but it's not something I can dwell on. Anyways, wish me luck! :)

What a heartbreaking story, you're incredibly strong-willed to have borne that burden for so long. ;-; It makes me glad and relieved you were able to finally have access to the medical procedure to remove it - you must be so thrilled! :) I wish you well on your recovery, and hope you will be able to jog again, as well as have some relief from a lifetime of those chronic symptoms!

Rest a lot and treat yourself extra-well while you recover. <3

Maybe you can make a necklace or some kind of keepsake out of the bullet, as a trophy of what you're stronger than. :) Awesome news. I wish you all the best.

Goodbye, good riddance. My lungs do not work right (for very different reasons) and I now know what it is like to not be able to do ANYTHING, even laugh, without horrible coughing, and I really hopes this allows you more freedom. I used to run too.

Here is to spreading those wings and ... trying to figure out how those immensely powerful sighthound haunches will manage those waddly swan splashers in front. XD XD XD

Wow. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that through most of your life. I wish you luck and love in your recovery and that you'll be able to do all the things you were forced to miss out on because of this. I dunno how serious the gun shot could have been, but all I kept thinking of was how such a wonderful person could have been lost had it been more serious.

Wishing you luck somehow doesn't feel quite right.  How about I wish you a complete recovery, lots of fun and laughter, and an excellent pair of jogging shoes instead?

That bullet mustive made it a pain to go through airport security!
Pretty cool seeing how your body was trying to destroy that booger! Well maybe not so cool to you since you had it in you lol.
I had a foreign oblect lodged in my hand (pencil tip) thankfully that problem seemed to fix jtself but for the longest time I had a black spot on my hand well the size of pecil lead! After about 5 years I looked one day and it was gone! Interesting that one.
